Misty Anne Upham (born July 6, 1982 in Kalispell , Montana , † October 5, 2014 in Auburn , Washington ) was an American actress .

Life

Misty Upham was born in Kalispell in 1982 as the fourth of five children of a music teacher. Her family's ancestors were Blackfoot Indians. Her family moved to Seattle when Upham was eight. She attended various high schools in King County , Washington . As a teenager, she began acting in the Indian theater company Red Eagle Soaring . She also attended a Young Shakespeare workshop and performed at the Freehold Theater.

After finishing school, she wrote her own play, which was staged under her direction and with her as an actress at the Seattle Nippon Kan Theater. A film recording of the production brought her the request of the casting director Rene Haynes. After a month, she made her feature film debut in Chris Eyre's drama Skins . Upham later took on roles in various television films and series. In 2006 she appeared in Rick Stevenson's black comedy Expiration Date . In the summer of 2007, Upham moved to Los Angeles .

She became known to international audiences in 2008 for her role as Indian smuggler Lila in the drama Frozen River , opposite Melissa Leo . Upham had already been involved in the project for a number of years and appeared in 2004 together with Leo in the short film by director Courtney Hunt , which served as the inspiration for Frozen River . For the role in Frozen River , Upham put on 20 kilos and had her waist-length hair cut off without the director's knowledge in order to play the role of the Mohawk Indian woman as little clichéd as possible. The role earned Upham the 2008 American Indian Movie Award at the American Indian Film Festival and a nomination for best supporting female role at the 2009 Independent Spirit Awards .

On October 16, 2014, Misty Upham was found dead in a forest in Auburn , Washington state. She was last seen alive on October 5, 2014 when she left her sister's home near Seattle . Her family reported her missing a few days later. According to police investigations, she died on the day of her disappearance; whether through a crime, an accident or suicide remained unclear even after the autopsy.
