Kevin Willmott

Kevin Willmott (born August 31, 1959 ) is an American actor , film director , screenwriter and film producer . As a co- writer on Spike Lee's film BlacKkKlansman , Wachtel received the award for best screenplay at the 2019 Academy Awards .

Life

Kevin Willmott was born in 1959, grew up in Junction City, Kansas and attended Marymount College, from which he graduated with a BA. After graduating, he worked for a civil rights activist. He studied at New York University, the Tisch School of the Arts, received several author awards and earned a Master of Fine Arts.

With the 1999 drama Ninth Street , Willmott made his debut as a director and screenwriter. In January 2004 he presented his critically acclaimed mockumentary CSA: The Confederate States of America , in which the southern states won the American Civil War, at the Sundance Film Festival . In 2009 he presented his western The Only Good Indian at the Sundance Film Festival , starring Wes Studi , J. Kenneth Campbell and newcomer Winter Fox Frank .

Willmott worked with Spike Lee on the 2015 film Chi-Raq, for whom he was the screenwriter of the films BlacKkKlansman and Da 5 Bloods .

Willmott is currently a professor of media and film studies at the University of Kansas.
