CSA: The Confederate States of America is an American mockumentary (as documentary staged feature film ) from director Kevin Willmott from the year 2004. The film stages a world in which the southern states of the American Civil War won, what a completely different course of History ( alternate world history ). Actors, who are experts in American history and politics, comment on the flashbacks on the fictional historical events in the style of a documentary film. Fictional commercials are also played that clearly emphasize the satirical character of the film.

action

In contrast to the real course of history succeeds Judah P. Benjamin , France and Great Britain to enter the war on the side of the Confederate States of America (CSA) to persuade. The southern states thereby win the Battle of Gettysburg and shortly afterwards take Washington, DC . On April 9, 1864, Ulysses S. Grant signed the surrender of the United States Army , and President Abraham Lincoln had to flee to Canada . In 1905, shortly before his death, the 96-year-old Lincoln gave an interview in his Canadian exile in which he regretted having turned the Civil War into a struggle for slavery .

The territory of the CSA now extends to the entire former United States . The flag of the Confederate States of America becomes the national flag and the song Dixie becomes the national anthem . President Jefferson Davis is moving from Richmond to Washington, DC and legalizing slavery in the Northern states . Many African American and white abolitionists then followed the escaped Abrahm Lincoln to Canada. In the 1890s, Chinese migrants who settled on the west coast are also enslaved. In addition, Christianity is established as the state religion .

At the beginning of the 20th century , the CSA began to conquer Latin America . In subjugated countries like Mexico , the occupiers set up apartheid regimes. Until 1929, almost the entire continent was under the control of the Confederation. The stock market crash caused a temporary return to national isolationism , but thanks to the resumption of the transatlantic slave trade , the recession can be overcome quickly.

When the Second World War broke out, the CSA, who were sympathetic to National Socialism, behaved neutrally and saw no enemy in Germany , but attacked Japan on December 7, 1941 without prior declaration of war . Thanks to the use of atomic bombs , the Confederation wins the Pacific War , but in Europe the Germans are defeated by the Soviet Union .

In the post-war period , the CSA became increasingly isolated in foreign policy due to the newly founded United Nations ; only South Africa remained a loyal ally. With the northern neighbor Canada , which has meanwhile risen to the cultural center of the western world, a kind of cold war is developing , which culminates in the construction of a huge wall along the national borders.

In 1960 the Republican John F. Kennedy wins the presidential election against the Democrat Richard Nixon. The progressive Kennedy promises to free the slaves, but succumbs to an assassination attempt before he can carry out his plan. The subsequent race riots are brutally suppressed.

The short era of new beginnings is followed by a renaissance of the arch-conservative hardliners, among other things violence against women and homosexuals is legalized. When Democratic Senator John Ambrose Fauntroy V ran for the presidency in 2002, a film crew revealed that he had African American ancestors. The ultra-conservative Fauntroy V loses the elections and commits suicide as a result .

reception

The film received mixed to positive reviews. Many critics praised the idea, but saw flaws in the implementation due to the low budget. At Rotten Tomatoes , the film received a rating of 78%, in the IMDb 6.4 out of 10 stars.
