Domee Shi ( Chinese  石之予 , Pinyin Shi Zhīyǔ , * 1989 in Chongqing , China ) is a Chinese-Canadian storyboard draughtswomen ( storyboard artist ) and director at Pixar (since 2011). She was involved in the creation of various films such as Everything is Heads Up (2015), The Incredibles 2 (2018) and Toy Story 4 (2019) as a storyboard artist. In 2018 the short film Bao , directed by her, was released , which was shown in the cinema together with The Incredibles 2 . She was the first woman to direct a Pixar short film. The short film won an Oscar in the Best Animated Short Film category.

Life

Shi was born in China in 1989 as the only child of her parents, who two years later emigrated to Canada together . Before moving to Toronto , they lived in Newfoundland for half a year . Shi's father had been an art professor and landscape painter in China.

In high school , Shi became the vice president of the anime club there. She got in touch with like-minded people through her own manga drawings that she had published at DeviantArt . Eventually she enrolled at Sheridan College in Ontario , where she studied animation .

After graduating in 2011, she did a three-month internship at Pixar as a storyboarder; then she continued to work there.

Awards (selection)

For Inside Out Shi was at the Annie Awards in the category Outstanding Achievement in Story boarding at Animated Feature Production ( Excellent Storyboard performance in an animation film production nominated).

The short film Bao won her the Oscar 2019 in the category Best Animated Short Film as well as nominations at the Tribeca Film Festival ( Best Narrative Short ) and at the International Online Cinema Awards ( Best Animated Film ).
