Lifeboat (German lifeboat ; own spelling LIFEBOAT ) is an English-language documentary short film directed by Skye Fitzgerald , who also co-produced the film. It is about volunteers from the German non-profit organization Sea-Watch who rescue migrants from sinking rafts on the Mediterranean Sea off Libya. The film was first shown on August 1, 2018 at the Traverse City Film Festival .

Lifeboat is nominated in the Best Documentary Short Film category at the 2019 Academy Awards.

The film was shot in 2016. Filmmaker Fitzgerald accompanied the Sea-Watch crew under Captain Jon Castle for two weeks on the voyage with the converted research vessel Zodiac off the coast of Libya. The film shows the mission through the eyes of Jon Castle (1950–2018). Castle was a Greenpeace skipper on the Rainbow Warrior for a long time . In 2016 he volunteered for the Sea-Watch mission.

Production

The film is the second part of a planned three-part documentary short film series by Fitzgerald. The first film was 50 Feet from Syria from 2015.

Awards and nominations

On the Traverse City Film Festival was awarded Lifeboat an honorable mention. He won the Best Short Documentary Award at the Telluride Mountain Film Festival . Lifeboat received an "Action and Change Together" ( ACT Now ) award at the Crested Butte Film Festival . The jury of the BendFilm Festival chose the film as the best short documentary. At the Woodstock Film Festival , the documentary won the Maverick Prize for Best Documentary Short.

The film was nominated in the Best Documentary Short Film category for the 2019 Academy Awards. When Hamptons International Film Festival was Lifeboat contender for the prize for the best short documentary, but lost to Guaxuma of Nara Normande . The International Documentary Association nominated Lifeboat 2018 for the Best Documentary Short Film Award.
