Dave Shirk

David "Dave" Shirk is a VFX Supervisor who won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 2014 for Gravity .

Life

He grew up with three siblings Douglas, Dennis and Kimberly in New Holland , Pennsylvania and graduated from Garden Spot High School . He then studied film as a major at the Pratt Institute , with fine arts and illustration as minor subjects. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1989. After graduating, he worked for the French company Soft Image , which was later bought by Microsoft .

In 2004 he moved to California and has worked at Industrial Light & Magic ever since . He has been involved in films such as The Island , Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, and Elysium . 2014 he was awarded for the film Gravity , together with Tim Webber , Chris Lawrence and Neil Corbould the Oscar in the category Best Visual Effects .

He lives in San Francisco with his wife Cathy , who works as an accountant for George Lucas . His brother Dennis Shirk worked as a game designer for Firaxis Games, among other things on the video game Civilization: Beyond Earth .
