Gloria Pearl Katz (born October 25, 1942 in Los Angeles ; † November 25, 2018 there ) was an American screenwriter and producer. Oscar-nominated Katz worked with her husband Willard Huyck on the George Lucas films American Graffiti and Star Wars and many other projects.

Career

Katz studied at Berkeley University and UCLA , where she graduated with a Masters from the Film Academy. Together with Willard Huyck , with whom she was married since 1969, she wrote numerous scripts and acted as a producer for his films. She was best known for her collaboration with George Lucas , with whom she and her husband wrote the script for American Graffiti . The trio of authors was nominated for the Best Original Screenplay category at the 1974 Academy Awards. In a 2017 interview, Katz said Lucas also contacted her as a Script Doctor when he had "numerous doubts" about his script for Star Wars . “He said, 'Brush it up. Write in everything you want. I will then see what I use of it '. George didn't want anyone to know we were working on the script, so we shut up. ”Katz noted that she and Huyck added as much humor as possible and wrote about 30 percent of the dialogue. They designed Princess Leia as a woman who "can take command and who does not accept any nonsense - instead of just being dragged along as a beautiful woman so that she can be saved."

Katz and Huyck also wrote the script for Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom . In 1986 the less successful film Howard followed, directed by her husband. The film received numerous nominations for the Golden Raspberry . After that, Katz experienced a long dry spell. The last realized script she was involved in was written for Mel Smith 's film Radioland Murders .

Her brother is the cameraman Stephen M. Katz .
