In custody (Original title: Detainment ) is an Irish short film directed by Vincent Lambe from 2018. The film is based on the murder of James Bulger by two 10-year-old children in England. It was nominated in the Best Short Film category at the 91st Academy Awards in 2019 .

In the film, the two boys Jon and Robert are interrogated separately. They are accused of kidnapping two-year-old James from a mall and then murdering him.

The real-life interrogation records of Jon Venables and Robert Thompson form the basis of the plot of In Custody . According to director and screenwriter Vincent Lambe, the movie's concern is to understand why the boys committed the murder. He wants to set a contrast to the opinion spread in the tabloid media that the boys are simply "bad".

reception

In custody received generally positive reviews. In particular, the achievements of the young actors were praised. The film has so far received the approval of 83 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics with an average rating of 7.8 out of a possible 10 points.

The film has been criticized for being made without the consent of the murdered James Bulger's parents. The mother accuses the film of generating sympathy for the perpetrators and petitioned to withdraw the Oscar nomination.
