Leonardo Bonzi

Leonardo Bonzi (born December 22, 1902 in Milan , † December 30, 1977 in San Michele di Ripalta Cremasca , Province of Cremona ) was an Italian athlete, documentary filmmaker and producer .

Life

Bonzi came from a noble family, had the title of Conte and was a successful athlete as a young man: he was a participant in the first Olympic Winter Games in 1924 , in which he competed in the four-man bobsleigh competition for his home country . In 1926 and 1929 he won a total of three national tennis titles in mixed and doubles.

Several times he received awards for bravery from the army, where he served as a pilot.

Later Bonzi became interested in travel and financed numerous expeditions around the world. The social situation of v. a. of children in the countries visited. In 1948 he drove a racing car in South America to draw attention to the situation of disabled children. In the 1950s he worked as a producer and director of documentaries for such expeditions, and occasionally also for feature films . Continente perduto received awards at the Cannes Film Festival and the Berlinale in 1955 . In 1958, La muraglia cinese, produced by Bonzi, received the David di Donatello .

In 2006 a museum named after him was opened in the place where he died.
