Destin Daniel Cretton (born November 23, 1978 in Haiku , Hawaii ) is an American director , screenwriter and producer .

life and career

Cretton was born in 1978 in Haiku on the Hawaiian island of Maui to Janice Harue Cretton, a Japanese-American hairdresser, and Daniel Cretton, a firefighter of Irish and Slovak descent. He has five siblings. He later moved to San Diego to study communications at Point Loma Nazarene University. According to his own statements, it was here that he got to know Lars von Trier's films . After graduating, Cretton worked for two years as a clerk in a youth facility.

He has received several awards for his film Short Term 12 , including the Short Film Grand Jury Prize at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. He also wrote the script for I Am Not a Hipster , which he presented at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012.

In 2014, Cretton was hired to write and direct a new screenplay for Schloss von Glas . It is an adaptation of the bestseller of the same name by Jeannette Walls . The film was released in 2017. Cretton then directed Just Mercy, starring Brie Larson and Michael B. Jordan , based on Bryan Stevenson's bestseller Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption . The film is scheduled to premiere in September 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival 2019 .

In March 2019, Cretton was hired by Marvel Studios to direct Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings , the 26th feature film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the first in the franchise to feature a protagonist from Asia.

At Schloss aus Glas and Just Mercy , Cretton was entrusted with the adaptation of mostly autobiographical novels in addition to his work as a director.
