Judy is a biography by Rupert Goold that premiered on August 30, 2019 as part of the Telluride Film Festival and was released in cinemas in the United Kingdom on October 2, 2019, and was released in Germany on January 2, 2020. The film plays in the last year of life of the American film actress and singer Judy Garland in 1969 and shows her appearances in London in particular. Renée Zellweger took on the title role and was honored as best leading actress at the 2020 Academy Awards .

action

The once celebrated film actress and singer Judy Garland , who was in front of the camera at the age of 16 for the film The Wizard of Oz , is now 46 years old, broke and practically unemployed. Los Angeles hotels served as her home in the late 1960s. She is dependent on alcohol and tablets. When the theater impresario Bernard Delfont invites her to a five-week engagement in London, where she is supposed to appear in the glamorous Talk of the Town nightclub , she has no choice but to accept the invitation and her two younger children Lorna and Joey with their ex -Leaving husband Sid behind.

While this is no comparison to what she is used to from earlier times, it is at least a way to make some money. However, she is increasingly troubled by health problems, especially insomnia. Although her assistant Rosalyn has the job of making sure that Judy arrives at the theater on time and reasonably sober, she is far too late for most appearances. Nevertheless, she completed the engagement.

Biographical

Judy Garland became famous for her starring role in the 1939 film classic The Wizard of Oz , in which she sang the original version of the song Over the Rainbow . She made over two dozen films for MGM , nine of them alongside Mickey Rooney , but was considered extremely difficult to film. She had drug problems at an early age and took stimulants and sleeping pills as needed, which at that time was considered safe.

After a series of scandals, Garland was released from her contract in 1950. Her marriage to Vincente Minnelli , with whom she had the daughter Liza Minnelli , was on the verge of failure. Garland moved away from Hollywood and spent most of the last years of her life in London, where she married the nightclub owner Deans in March 1969. Garland died of a secobarbital overdose in June 1969, twelve days after her 47th birthday .

production

The film is based on the play End of the Rainbow by Peter Quilter , which was adapted for the film by Tom Edge . Directed by Rupert Goold .

Renée Zellweger took the title role from Judy Garland. Darci Shaw plays the young Garland in flashbacks. Finn Wittrock plays her younger lover and later fifth husband Mickey Deans. Michael Gambon took on the role of their British promoter, Bernard Delfont. Jessie Buckley plays Rosalyn Wilder's assistant, Richard Cordery plays MGM studio boss Louis B. Mayer . Gemma-Leah Devereux plays Garland's daughter Liza Minnelli . Bella Ramsey and Lewin Lloyd can be seen in the roles of their children Lorna and Joey, who emerged from their marriage to show producer Sidney Luft , who is played in the film by Rufus Sewell . The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw notes that the film is careful to recognize the importance of Garland's gay fan base by including two fictional gay fans in the roles.

Oscar winner Gabriel Yared composed the film music. Zellweger took on Garland's vocal parts, supported by Sam Smith and Rufus Wainwright . The soundtrack, which comprises a total of 17 pieces of music, was released for download by Decca Classics on October 11, 2019. Before that, a separate album with the songs from the film was released.

A first trailer was presented in May 2019. The film was first shown on August 30, 2019 as part of the Telluride Film Festival . From September 10, 2019, it was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival . A theatrical release in the USA took place on September 27, 2019, in the UK on October 2, 2019. Reviews and grossing results

83 percent of all critics recorded by Rotten Tomatoes rated the film positively, it received 7 out of a possible 10 points (as of October 15, 2019).

Variety's Guy Lodge writes that when the flashbacks show how the directors of the film studio ultimately took control of the girl's mind and body, whether she was swallowing diet pills or being dictated to her romances, that explains the unrest, from which Judy Garland could never completely free herself . Judy sums it up with increasing sadness: "Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it needs one to ruin it." Even if it was almost impossible to imagine the actress Renée Zellweger in this role, the cast makes sense almost two decades later [after their great successes] when a former darling of American film now plays Judy Garland with noticeable affection and emotion, when she knows the way across the rainbow and back, says Lodge.

Brian Viner of the Daily Mail writes that when Zellweger sings The Trolley Song , you can swear to see archive footage. Keith Uhlich of Slant Magazine, on the other hand, says that Zellweger hits all the tones, but Garland's intense emotion, the feeling that she falls back on the dark, deeply hidden feelings and experiences that were shaped by a life in the spotlight at every moment, would elude her.

Gerhard Midding from epd Film notes that Zellweger feels a tense energy and vulnerability in Garland's and enjoys their touch of self-irony: “When she lends her voice to Garland, then sometimes she has a vibrato that is aimed directly at the heart. The finale of the film could soften a stone. "

Gaby Sikorski from the Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater thinks how Zellweger plays, how she sings and how she slips into the personality of the star is almost uncanny: “There is a lot of sadness, but also a flash of humor from time to time, her quick-wittedness and of course always nor the talent: the voice. And Renée Zellweger sings and plays herself into the hearts of the audience. "

The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings is $ 39.2 million. In Germany it has 113,578 visitors.
