The Money Changer (Engl. "The money changers", AKA Así hablo el cambista ) is a tragicomedy of Federico Veiroj that in September 2019 as part of the Toronto International Film Festival celebrated its premiere. The film will also be screened at the Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián in September 2019 .

In the 1970s, Uruguay was under military rule. Criminals from Brazil and Argentina try to launder their money in the country. Humberto Brause, who comes from Montevideo, gets into currency trading and is supported by his father-in-law. When he got a job in a family business, he believed he could launder huge amounts of money.

Directed by Federico Veirojs . The film is based on the novel Así habló el cambista by his compatriot Juan Enrique Gruber from 1979. The film received a production grant of 40,000 euros from the World Cinema Fund.

Daniel Hendler can be seen in the lead role of Humberto Brause.

The shooting took place in Uruguay from mid-April to early June 2018.

The film will be presented from September 8, 2019 in the Platform section of the Toronto International Film Festival . The film will be shown at the Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián at the end of September 2019 . It is slated to hit cinemas in Uruguay on October 10, 2019.

Awards

The film was submitted by Uruguay as an entry for the Academy Awards 2020 in the category Best International Film , but was not shortlisted. Further nominations follow.
