Richard Stanley (born November 22, 1966 in Fishhook , South Africa ) is a director and screenwriter . He is a great-grandson of the Africa explorer Sir Henry Morton Stanley .

Life

Richard Stanley campaigned against apartheid , went to London and made music videos there . In 1983 Stanley made his directorial debut with the short film Rites of Passage . The film Incidents in an Expanding Universe followed two years later . He then directed films such as MARK 13 - Hardware (1990) and Dust Devil (1992) and worked on several music videos for the band Fields of the Nephilim and a fifty-minute DVD video for the British rock group Marillion for their album Brave .

Stanley was the original director of DNA - The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996), a remake of Doctor Moreau's Island by HGWells - with Marlon Brando . However, he was replaced by John Frankenheimer . In the following two decades or so he made no more feature films. He then stayed in the jungle and then disappeared for a few years on the Montségur in the French Pyrenees .

He has made two documentaries ; The Secret Glory (2001), which is about the search for the Holy Grail by the SS under Obersturmführer Otto Rahn , and The White Darkness (2002), which examines voodoo customs in Haiti . Both documentaries are also available as a bonus on the Dust Devil DVD box, released by Subversive Cinema in September 2006.

He also produced low-budget - short films like the science fiction film The Sea of Perdition , which made its debut in the October 2006 Sitges Festival Internacional de Cinema de Catalunya celebrated. Other short films were u. a. Black Tulips and Children of the Kingdom (99, - Euro budget), which was shown at the Oldenburg Film Festival . Both can be seen online on Richard Stanley's official Myspace page, as well as trailers for other projects.

In 2007 Richard Stanley wrote a new screenplay ( there was already a 15-year-old script at the time, the content of which was discarded ) for a follow-up to MARK 13 - Hardware , called Hardware II: Ground Zero . Richard Stanley's Myspace page shows a picture of a movie poster that reads: Hardware II: Ground Zero , coming soon. A release date and whether the film will be shot at all is not known. It is also unclear who owns the rights.

In January 2012, Stanley was recruited for the horror anthology film The Profane Exhibit and should direct the Coltan segment . In the finished film, however, there is no episode of his with this title. In 2011 he wrote the script and directed the segment "The Mother Of Toads" in the horror anthology film The Theater Bizarre .

In 2019 he directed the horror film The Color from Space with Nicolas Cage , Joely Richardson and Tommy Chong . He was also involved in the script, which is based on a story by HP Lovecraft . This is his first directorial feature film since the mid-1990s.
