Saturday Fiction (original title Lán xīn dà jùyuàn ) is a film drama by Lou Ye that celebrated its world premiere on September 4, 2019 as part of the Venice Film Festival and is due to hit Chinese cinemas on December 7, 2019. In the film, the actress Yu Jin, played by Li Gong, works undercover for the Allies and learns of the Japanese plan to attack Pearl Harbor .

In 1941 during World War II . Since the Japanese occupation, China has become a theater of war for the Allies and the Axis powers . Famed actress Yu Jin returns to Japan-occupied Shanghai , ostensibly to rehearse for Saturday Fiction , directed by her former lover. In truth, however, it is supposed to collect information for the Allies. So she learns of the planned Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor .

Directed by Lou Ye , the screenplay was written by Yingli Ma based on motifs from the novels "Death of Shanghai" by Hong Ying and "Shanghai" by Yokomitsu Riichi . The film was shot in black and white, with DoP Jian Zeng mainly working with the handheld camera . The film has Chinese subtitles.

The film was shown from September 4, 2019 as part of the Venice Film Festival , where it competed for the Golden Lion and celebrated its world premiere. In September 2019, the film was also shown at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Special Presentations .
