The Zrmanja is a karst river in southern Croatia . It rises in the area of the southern Velebit mountain range and has a length of 69 km. A few kilometers after the town of Obrovac it flows into the Adriatic Sea . The Zrmanja flows through a karst area . Under special physical and chemical conditions, nature in this area constantly creates new rock from plant remains (see Plitvice Lakes ). Typical of the Zrmanja as well as other karst rivers is its clear, emerald green shimmering water.
About 4 km as the crow flies northwest of Kaštel Žegarski the Krupa flows into it. A few kilometers downstream is a reservoir that feeds a hydroelectric power station. Below this reservoir, the water level and current can therefore fluctuate considerably.
The Zrmanja above the reservoir is a popular destination for rafting and canoe tours . 300 m northwest of the confluence of the Krupa and Zrmanja rivers is the Visoki-Buk waterfall, which is a highlight of canoe tours. Below the reservoir, between a waterfall approx. 1 km above Obrovac and the confluence with the Adriatic Sea, it can also be accessed by motorboat.
In December 2019, the river downstream of Obrovac was severely polluted after oil leaked from a former alumina factory.
