The pumped storage power plant Velebit Croatian Reverzibilna hidroelektrana Velebit , with natural inflow, is located on the Zrmanja River , 10 km upstream from the Croatian town of Obrovac in the Zadar County and belongs to the company HEP Proizvodnja , a subsidiary of Hrvatska elektroprivreda . It is the only large pumped storage power plant in Croatia, there are also two more, whose output is significantly lower.

The power plant, which went into operation in 1984, has two sets of machines, each consisting of a pump turbine and a synchronous three-phase motor generator . These each have an output of 138 MW in turbine operation and 120 MW in pump operation, a total of 276 MW and 240 MW respectively. The pump turbines are designed for a flow rate of 30 m³ / s each at a head of 517 m in turbine mode or 20 m³ / s and 559 m in pump mode.

The Razovac reservoir , which uses the water of the Zrmanja, serves as the lower basin . The upper basin is the Štikada reservoir , which also uses other tributaries (Opsenica, Ričica, Krivak and Otuča). The upper basin has a volume of 13.65 million m³.

Since the power plant also uses natural inflows, the annual power generation in generator mode is significantly higher than power consumption in pumping mode.
