action

“In the wild, barely explored mountains of the Kurdish country, lives the mysterious Jesidi association , whom their opponents call the devil worshipers. In these mountains, shaded by dark fir trees, there is vengeance and hatred and constant struggle between the countless races and sects. Strange festivals unite the fervor of thousands, crowned by the dramatic sacrificial death of one of their holy men. And yet in these pictures, filled with tremendous passions, there is no lack of warm humor and a cheerful, strong forgiveness that leads everything to a liberating end. "(From the rental text)

Remarks

The devil worshiper was shot by Ustad-Film as the first film in a small series, but was only released as the third film. During the shooting, the film was titled Among the Devil Worshipers . The black-and-white film was tinted in various scenes ( Viragierung ), that is, provided with a colored mask, e.g. B. blue for night shots. The film had a length of 1,648 m (6 acts), which, depending on the playback speed, corresponded to a length of between 60 and 90 minutes. The playback speed could vary between 16 and 24 frames per second.

The film was a commercial failure. He is considered lost . Employees of the Karl May Archives followed his trail to the Moscow Archives, but no copies have been found to date. It includes an early film appearance by the later Dracula star Bela Lugosi .

The film was presumably premiered on January 2, 1921 in Father's light plays in Würzburg . The first documented performance took place on January 14, 1921 in Wilhelmsburg.

The film's director later became one of the most important figures in early Turkish cinema .
