Stephen Page

Stephen Page (* 1965 in Brisbane ) is an Australian ballet dancer and choreographer .

The descendant of Yugambeh Aborigines came to Sydney in the early 1980s and studied dance with the National Aboriginal and Islander Skills Development Association . From 1983 he performed with the Sydney Dance Company . Since 1991 he has been artistic director of the Bangarra Dance Theater , to which his brothers Russell as dance master and David as resident composer belonged.

Page choreographed numerous successful ballets for the Bangarra Dance Theater, including Fish (1997), Rites , 1997 Skin (2000), Walkabout (2002), Gathering (2006), Mathinna (2008), Patyegarang (2014), Lore (2015), Nyapanyapa (2016), Bennelong (2017), Dark Emu (2018) and Dubboo - life of a songman (2018), as well as for Opera Australia and the Australian Ballet ( Alchemy , 1996 and Totem , 2002, a solo for the dancer Stephen Heathcote ).

Page has received numerous awards for his work, including the Australian Dance Award (1997), six times the Helpmann Award (2001, 2002, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2016), and twice the Sydney Myer Performing Arts Award (2003 and 2004 ) and twice with the NAIDOC Award (2012 and 2016). He was honored as Officer of the Order of Australia at the Queen's Birthday awards in 2017 .
