Class wedges (subtitle: Becoming a Pauker is not difficult - being a student, on the other hand, is very ) is a German comedy film that was shot in West Berlin in early 1969 under the direction of Franz Josef Gottlieb . With this film, the producer Horst Wendlandt tried to participate in the success of the film series Die Lümmel von der Erste Bank . The mass start in German cinemas and the premiere in Berlin's Gloria Palast took place on March 28, 1969. The film with Uschi Glas and Walter Giller in the leading roles was attended by around 2.5 million moviegoers.

action

Uschi Glas, here a recording from 2010, played Katja Hutten.
Anita Kupsch, here a recording from 2011, played Manuela Schulz.

Manuela Schulz has finally made it: Due to notorious ignorance and constant student pranks, she is thrown from school and now plans to finally marry her great love Peter Keuthmann. However, he is only a greengrocer and for Manuela's father is therefore not good enough for his daughter. Manuela's best friend Katja Hutten is also not very enthusiastic about her expulsion, as the young journalist is currently writing an article about the school as it really is. Manuela was always able to provide her with the latest information. So she convinces Manuela's father Willy to enroll his daughter at Hebbel-Gymnasium. The teachers there are not very enthusiastic about having to accept a six-year student, but the young and modern teacher Dr. Wagner for the unknown student. Manuela, however, quickly delivers all the school supplies to Katja - if she wants a school story, she should take her place in the class. After a short hesitation, Katja agrees.

She is now attending the 13th grade at Hebbel-Gymnasium as Manuela Schulz. Her classmates quickly make it clear that all teachers can be tricked, except for class teacher Dr. Wagner. He is suspicious of all other teachers because of his modern upbringing and teaching methods, but he sticks to his students. Katja sticks to it, and so gradually all the other teachers fall victim to prank: a teacher is equipped with white mice, a teacher is poured with water, and the chemistry teacher, who lets all students taste a distillate from which all alcohol was withdrawn, suddenly sees all the students slurred heavily.

During a visit to a disco where Katja is discussing the latest school articles with her boss, Dr. Wagner with his niece. He and Katja dance together, and Katja, who wants to test whether Wagner's niece is jealous, kisses him briefly. The press photographer promptly photographs this kiss, and a little later the teaching staff has the prints on the table. Against Dr. Disciplinary proceedings are initiated for Wagner , and Katja receives class wedges from her classmates as punishment .

Dr. Wagner wants to confront Katja - in his eyes Manuela Schulz - because of the pictures and visits Willy Schulz in his shop. He calls his daughter and the real Manuela appears. The dizziness is soon discovered and Manuela escapes to Peter, with whom she develops a plan that should make the wedding possible for the two of them. After a while she returns to Willy and explains that Peter broke up with her. Willy is outraged that Peter is leaving her alone in such a difficult phase of life and goes to Peter to confront him. When he realizes that Peter is not only a trader but also the owner of a small vegetable empire, he finally begs him to marry Manuela after all, and both have achieved their goal.

Meanwhile, Katja is working as a journalist again and is writing an article about the attempts of the 13th grade to find her suspended class teacher Dr. To get Wagner back. In fact, the class has gone on strike and refuses to graduate from high school without its teacher. Even more: Katja announces in her article that in the next episode she will expose all teachers whom she played tricks on. In the end, it's Dr. Wagner who prevents this. He locks Katja in her apartment shortly before the article is due and puts on an article himself that pretends that all the school articles of the last few weeks were just an invention. He rehabilitated his colleagues with a representation of how difficult the life of a teacher is. He and Katja become a couple. So it comes to a happy ending, especially since all 13th grade students, with the exception of Manuela Schulz, have passed their Abitur. Dr. Wagner, in turn, becomes the new headmaster and immediately gets a foretaste of the new task when his predecessor ignites a smoke bomb in front of his nose.

History of origin

prehistory

Horst Wendlandt Rialto Film was commissioned by the Constantin film distribution end of 1968 with To hell with Penne the second part of the film series The clown of the first bank produced. The third part should again be produced by Franz Seitz , the initiator and screenwriter of the film series. Because the sequel to the real "Lümmel" series was not due to be released until the early summer of 1969, Rialto Film produced the student comedy Klassenkeile on behalf of Constantin-Verleihe and in cooperation with its subsidiary Terra Filmkunst at the beginning of the year .

Pre-production and script

Horst Wendlandt had the film title legally protected in 1961. According to a script by comedy specialist Kurt Nachmann , a Caterina Valente and Peter Alexander film was originally planned, but it was never realized. The author Paul Hengge and the director Franz Josef Gottlieb have now created a contemporary revision of the old script. The film could be cast with some prominent actors from the real "Lümmel" films, including Uschi Glas , Rudolf Schündler , Inge Wolffberg , Hans Terofal and Willy Millowitsch . In addition, well-known film and theater actors, mainly active in what was then West Berlin, such as Walter Giller , Anita Kupsch , Siegfried Schürenberg , Tilly Lauenstein and Ewald Wenck also appeared in the film . The well-known cabaret artist Werner Finck was hired for the role of director .

Filming

The Rheingau-Oberschule in Berlin-Friedenau can be seen in the film as Hebbel-Gymnasium.

The shooting took place from January 29 to March 1, 1969 in the studios of CCC-Film in Berlin-Haselhorst and in snowy West Berlin. The Rheingau high school in Berlin-Friedenau served as the backdrop for the fictional Hebbel high school . The equipment came from Hans-Jürgen Kiebach and Rüdiger Schramm. Ingrid Zoré was responsible for the costumes .

Film music

The original soundtrack comes from Martin Böttcher using the composition A Banda by Chico Buarque . Three of the instrumental titles from the film, composed by Böttcher himself, have so far been released on CD :

  1. Class Wedges (theme music, 1:52)
  2. Go Go With Uschi (1:45)
  3. In The City (2:07)

In addition , the Dutch child star Wilma has an appearance in the film, as a counterpart to Heintje in To the Devil with the Penne , with the hit A day like this day . The song appeared on a record of the label Metronome at the time .

reception

Release, success

The FSK released the film on March 26, 1969, two days before it opened in theaters, for ages 6 and up. The more than satisfactory success of the film encouraged film producers and distributors to continue to bring "Penne" and "Pauker" films to movie theaters. In 1970 Horst Wendlandt produced another film on the subject of school with the remake Die Feuerzangenbowle , directed by Helmut Käutner , again with Uschi Glas and Walter Giller in the leading roles.

Publication, DVD

The film premiered in the Federal Republic of Germany on March 28, 1969. It was also shown in Belgium under the Flemish title De Lummels van d'eerste Bank and under the French title Les cancres des premiers bancs . The English title is Spanking at School .

criticism

The daily newspaper Die Rheinpfalz wrote at the time: “Uschi Glas, recently awarded the ' Bambi ', can be described as the most gratifying appearance of our young film generation ...” and in Mannheimer Morgen an interview with director FJ Gottlieb was referred to, who said : “This is a film for audiences between 6 and 60. The older generation also likes to watch such films. I think they all like to feel like they are back in school and they all want to have been such little crooks somehow. Then of course there is the need of the large audience to be able to laugh. One laughs far too little in this life ... "

The lexicon of international films could not agree with this in a later review and found:

“Not a weird mixture of love story and school clamor. The satirical swipes at authority problems in schools also remain blunt. "

TV Spielfilm punished the film even harder and wrote:

"This 'Feuerzangenbowle' is inedible: Everyone lines up to pick up the class wedges."

Also TV Todays verdict went in the same direction with the conclusion: "Humoristisch insufficient: failed!" And note:

“Uschi Glas is not Heinz Rühmann. This (but bland) version of the 'Feuerzangenbowle' is recommended to all doubters who want to check this statement for its truthfulness. "

TV Movie joined the negative review with the words:

"Dreary Sixties Humor"
