Maciste, the avenger of the damned (original title: Maciste all'inferno ) is a mythological adventure film with horror film elements, which was made in Italy in 1962 under the direction of Riccardo Freda . Its German-language premiere was on December 7, 1962.

In the 17th century in Scotland, on Loch Lake, Martha Gunt was sentenced as a witch and executed by the corrupt judge Parrish. She curses the village and its people. A hundred years later, a young woman of the same name comes to the area on her honeymoon. She is almost lynched. Then the muscular Maciste rushes over , uproots the witch tree that had grown at the point of death, which turns out to be the entrance to hell, and sets out to save the young woman. He has to deal with various dangers that are prepared for him in the underworld: lions, snakes, vultures, the giant Goliath and a sorceress cannot stop him. The final test turns evil to dust and good returns to the surface of the earth. Maciste rides off to meet new afflicted people.

Remarks

A Maciste film was made under the same original title as early as 1925. In the USA the film ran like so many of its kind in the "Sons of Hercules" series.
