Maciste

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maciste is a heroic figure with Herculean powers from the history of Carthage, invented by the Italian poet and writer Gabriele D'Annunzio .

In the film she was first embodied in Giovanni Pastrones monumental film classic Cabiria (1914) by Bartolomeo Pagano . From 1915 to 1927, 25 more Maciste films were made with Pagano in this role.

The character of Maciste experienced a revival in the so-called sandal films of the 1960s. Maciste also rushed to help people in geographically and historically distant areas. In the German-language versions it lost its identity several times because the distributor chose a title without the name.
