Maciste against the headhunters (original title: Maciste contro i cacciatori di teste ) is an adventure film that Guido Malatesta directed in 1963. The film, which was badly received by the critics, had its German premiere on October 22, 1965.

content

A volcanic eruption accompanied by a devastating earthquake destroys an island and kills many of the locals. Under the guidance of Maciste, the survivors can reach the mysterious Uria. There Maciste met Queen Amoha, whose people hide in the forest for fear of headhunters; these are savages eager to conquer Amoha's throne. Maciste takes the side of the queen, who is captured by the headhunters and whose chief is to marry. After much to and fro battles and feuds, the people of Urias are victorious. After a long duel with Maciste, the head hunter dies; the winner will be rewarded for his commitment with the love of Amoha.

criticism

The reviews were short and merciless: "The usual series piece" ( Lexicon of international film ), "Undemanding amateur theater" ( Filmdienst ). “The only interesting thing is the title, because it expresses a certain alienation of the audience from the incomparable muscle man Maciste, who is here renamed Tarzan” (C. Cobast, “Saison '64”, Paris 1964). “This time it was particularly primitive again, without momentum and with very poor acting. Not worth the slightest recommendation. "( Protestant film observer )

Remarks

The film and its hero experienced numerous alternative titles and metamorphoses: in Italy it was shown as Maciste contro i tagliatori di teste , in France as Tarzan chez les coupeurs de tête . Parts of the film were reused in Avengers of the Mayans by the same director.
