The mighty seven (original title: Maciste il gladiatore più forte del mondo , alternative title: Maciste - The mighty seven ) is an Italian monumental film from 1962 and is the debut film of the later comedy specialist Michele Lupo . It was first performed in Germany on August 30, 1963.
action
In the ancient state of Mersabad, Asia Minor, Princess Talima is waiting to be crowned. She has promised more freedom for her people, which the previously influential Oniris does not like. Therefore he sends his devotee Rufo to Rome, who is supposed to recruit gladiators there who are supposed to maintain the previous power structures with muscle power, that is: to kill the princess and put Oniris to power. Talima's sister Resia is one of the traitors in her own country and sees to it that the actual candidate for the throne is thrown into the dungeon. Enter Marcellus, who is as strong as a bear, who mingles with the gladiators and can defeat them one by one. Since he can count some of the Mersabad troops among his supporters, he is able to free Talima and hand Oniris to a higher power.
background
Once again, Maciste , who appears as a hero in the original, loses his identity in favor of a Marcellus who is probably closer to the German-speaking audience . As an alternative title ( Maciste and the mighty seven ), however, he was allowed to remain himself. The German distributor also deprived the film of many stylistic elements, for example the pre-title sequence in which the gladiators are presented individually and with their typical combat weapon.
The film grossed 444.5 million lire in Italy .
criticism
"The usual battle film about an ancient hero, this time made a little less simple."
"Naive" antique film "from Italian series production."
