Germanicus in the Underworld (original title: Maciste contro i mostri ) is a mythological adventure film with fantasy elements, which Guido Malatesta directed in 1962. The film premiered in Germany on June 14, 1963. A re-release title was Fuan's Barbaric Hordes . The film, which was criticized at the time of its creation, is considered a classic of the trash film .
action
In the distant past, a nameless people, whose youthful leader is called Aidar, is threatened by a fire dinosaur and saved by Maxus. Shortly afterwards, the group of Aidars is attacked by Fuan's cavemen at his wedding, and most of them are killed; the women are kidnapped and the fire extinguished. Maxus helps here too and follows suit with the remaining Fuans people, with all sorts of dangers to be overcome. In the cave landscape in which Fuan and his clan live, fights, intrigues develop and the kidnapped women who are supposed to be sacrificed are liberated. After further entanglements and dinosaur appearances, an earthquake ended the actually unequal fight in favor of Maxus, who had already achieved incredible things with his physical strength.
background
The hero of the film is called very differently depending on the version: In the original title it is Maciste , in the German title Germanicus , in the German dubbed version Maxus . American television showed this film as part of the Sons of Hercules series.
Bruno Mattei can also be found in the staff details of the film ; he was responsible for the sound editing.
A sociological investigation notes that the film already cultivated a latent racism in the filmic description of the group around Fuan - in contrast to the Aidars: They were depicted as "darker", only dressed in rags, lived in caves and their appearance underlaid with jungle music.
criticism
"The only thing worth seeing about this bungling is the pout of the absolutely untalented young mime Margaret Lee."
“The whole thing seems like a joke, but not a very funny one. The impression arises as if, at least for the female members of both ethnic groups, the third-class night clubs in Rome had been combed through. Your "cult" dances are merciful. "
