occupation

Marco - the invincible (original title: Maciste alla corte dello zar ) is a mythological adventure film that Tanio Boccia directed under his regular pseudonym Amerigo Anton in 1964 in Italy. The German premiere of the film took place on February 12, 1965.

action

On the border of Central Asia, some cave explorers, who are there on behalf of the despotic tsar, excavate a sarcophagus with the corpse of a muscleman. The sun with its light and its warmth awakens this, Marco, to new life; he proves his extraordinary strength. The tsar orders him to be brought to court; he would like to use his strength to protect his own interests.
Only the court girl Sonia is interested in the person behind the muscles and through her love she can convince the naive man of the insidiousness that reigns at court. When Marco now defies the Tsar's orders, he wants to kill him, but fails and even has to release some rebels, including Sonia's father. Another attack on Marco, this time with poison, succeeds; Sonia supplies him with the antidote. After his recovery, he leads the rebels in their fight against the tsar. He is disempowered and the grateful people revered Marco as a symbol of justice.

criticism

Ronald M. Hahn / Volker Jansen, Norbert Stresau judge the "serial film" (according to the lexicon of international film ) succinctly and harshly: "The acting 'qualities' correspond to the 'originality' of the story."

Film.tv.it sees a “routine film that puts a well-known and famous character in an unlikely environment”.

The Protestant film observer calls the work a "monster ham" and concludes that it is "completely worthless".

Remarks

The original is a film from the Maciste series; in the German version, the name Marco echoes the figure of the muscle man Marcco , interpreted by Joe Stöckel in the 1920s .

The film grossed 180 million lire in Italy.
