Bartolomeo Pagano

Bartolomeo Pagano (born September 27, 1878 in Genoa , Liguria , Italy , † June 24, 1947 ibid) was an Italian actor .

Life

Pagano worked as a dock worker and was discovered by film director Piero Fosco in the Genoese port. He offered him the role of the muscular, African slave Maciste in the monumental film Cabiria (1914). Due to the popularity of this character, Giovanni Pastrone began to direct a series of Maciste films from 1915 in which Pagano, as a strong, now white man, fights for the good. In Maciste alpino (1916) he defeated the Austrians - in the middle of the First World War. By the early 1920s, the simple plot had already been exhausted, and the economic decline of the Italian film industry after the First World War narrowed Pagano's chances of success in his homeland. He went to Germany and stood there in front of the camera in four German Maciste productions in 1922/23. In his role in Carl Boeses Maciste and the Chinese Chest , he was also pictured by the well-known Berlin photographer Frieda Riess .

Since the success in Germany was only moderate, Pagano went back to Italy in 1923 and received an engagement for a new Maciste series from producer Stefano Pittaluga . His most famous film from this later creative phase was Maciste all'inferno (1925) by Guido Brignone , in which the main character is torn between two devils.

Bartolomeo Pagano was only able to break away from his role as Maciste in 1927 with Baldassarre Negroni's costume film Il vetturale del Moncenisio , but the following year he withdrew completely from film work for health reasons.
