action

The rogue airline operator Comora is on the verge of bankruptcy with its ailing company. In order to get urgently needed money through the crash insurance, he plans to crash the next flight of one of his rickety propeller planes. He sabotages the oil pipeline and hires the rough, drunk bush pilot Butch Donovan. According to Comora's plan, the unsuspecting American should crash with the machine that is occupied by several European tropical vacationers. The crash should look like a tragic accident. With the insurance sum paid out, Comora hopes to be able to recover financially. But Comora's perfidious plan fails, because Donovan looks shabby and doesn’t make the most reliable impression, but as an experienced bush pilot, nobody fools him. He and his co-pilot Jeff Perkins can make an emergency landing of the decrepit aircraft on an uninhabited island somewhere in Africa. All passengers remain unharmed and get away with the horror.

In an abandoned radio station, the fragile find water supplies and food, so that they can survive for the next few days. You set yourself up there at home and at first you can even gain a lot from the seclusion. But the island is not completely uninhabited: you have to share the island with numerous wild animals, which are usually not always peaceful to humans. The first thing holiday travelers encounter is a group of lions who, to everyone's surprise, turn out to be quite tame and peaceful. Butch meets the native Maureen, and little black Tony, who traveled as a stowaway, proves to be a smart companion and helper. The love between Martin and Gaby is not neglected either.

Wilhelm Buerli, a technically gifted holidaymaker from Switzerland, succeeds in recovering a battery from the wrecked aircraft and thus starting a radio. As a result, the stranded can finally send an emergency signal to the outside world, which, unfortunately, Comora also receives. Since it is not at all right with him that there were survivors and thus witnesses during his attempt at sabotage, he sends some men to finish his shabby work and murder the survivors. Comora and his heavily armed gang of gangsters land on the island by helicopter. But to his astonishment, the stranded people have long made friends and allied with the wild animals, including panthers, tigers, elephants, rhinos and, surprisingly, a sea lion. Together, animals and humans succeed in gradually eliminating the villains, so that the missing can ultimately save themselves.

Production notes

The devil is rid of the jungle was inspired by the successful American film Roar (1981). The film was shot on 60 days between February 1 and May 9, 1982 in South Africa ( Pietermaritzburg , Johannesburg , Durban and the surrounding area) and the Seychelles . The studio recordings were made in Puchheim near Munich. The costs amounted to around 7 million DM. The film ran on September 4, 1982 in the Urania cinema in Leutkirch im Allgäu .

Producer Hartwig's long-time employee Ludwig Spitaler was in charge of production, Erich Tomek of Karl Spiehs team was in charge of production and Otto W. Retzer was in charge of recording. Peter Rothe designed the few film structures. The costumes come from the hand of Rolf Albrecht . Carl Schenkel assisted Harald Reinl and was also the director of the second team.

The song " In the jungle the devil is loose " comes from Bernie Paul and Charly Ricznek and was sung by Thomas Ohrner .

Reviews

The reviews of Reinl's last film were consistently very ungracious. Here are a few examples.

"The final point of his career was the action game ' In the jungle, the devil is loose ' , which is miserable in every respect and carried by bungling 'actors ' - a class far removed from previous brilliant entertainment performances such as ' The Treasure in Silver Lake '."

- Kay Less : The large personal dictionary of the film , Volume 6, page 463, Berlin 2001

"Moderate entertainment film with remarkable predator scenes."

"Reinl's last film IN THE JUNGLE IS THE DEVIL LOS ... failed because of its template-like template, which combined supposed humor with adventure film clichés."

Fischer's 1983 film Almanach stated : "There is no trace of imagination, and the gags are so old and stupid that sadness makes you cry".

In the fifth season of the satirical German television series The Worst Films of All Time , the film was broadcast as serial number 58 in 2017.
