action

Jäger Friedl went to war for two years and left his girlfriend Modei behind in the small mountain village of Fall . Contrary to his promise, he doesn't come to Fall after a year on vacation, but prefers to go hunting with his employer. Modei, who waited a year in vain for him, is now being courted by the Huisentoni. When Friedl returned to Fall after completing his two-year service, Modei lived with Toni - and was the mother of an illegitimate child.

Tensions between Toni and Friedl are not only due to fashion. Toni is known to all hunters as the “ nine nails ” - a poacher whose shoes have nine nails and who likes to shoot young game. The hunters have been on his track for a long time, but Toni can always escape at the last second and he doesn't leave any traces. Friedl is warned about Toni by a fellow hunter: Every act Friedl did against Toni could be seen as revenge because of Toni's relationship with Modei. Toni meanwhile pursues Friedl with hatred, fearing a renewed relationship between Friedl and Modei, who would also be positive about Modei's brother Lenz. Lenz is disturbed in a fire after the death of his parents and lives with Modei.

Toni wants to prove his superiority to Friedl and starts an illegal driven hunt with other poachers, including his brother Blasi . They carried the shot animals downriver on a raft. The hunters, Friedl among them, want to stop the raft by cutting down a tree near the river bank and laying it across the river. However, the tree breaks too late and crashes the raft. While Toni can escape, Blasi is killed by the tree.

The other poachers persuade Toni that Friedl actually wanted to hit him with the tree. Toni now thinks about murdering Friedl. After Blasi's death, his father decided to put Toni on the path of reason. He orders a marriage to a strange farmer's wife and Toni obeys. A tender romance develops between Friedl and Modei, especially since Friedl's mother takes in Modei's young son, who previously lived in the care of an acquaintance of Modei. Various attempts by Tonis to kill Friedl fail. When Toni Friedl lies in wait right on the alpine pasture and can surprise him, Toni escapes to Modei in the alpine hut against her will - Modei secretly removes the cartridges from Toni's rifle, but lies in front of Friedl who has arrived that Toni is not with her. When Toni Friedl finally threatened with the rifle, he could not fire a shot. However, when Friedl wants to shoot Toni, Modei stands protectively in front of the father of her child and Friedl believes that she has chosen Toni. He leaves the Alm and swears he will never come back. Only the level-headed Lenz can reconcile Friedl and Modei.

Friedl was chosen by the forester von Fall to be the hunting assistant of the Prince Regent , who is visiting the area. Toni finds out at which stand they both want to shoot game the next day and lies in wait to shoot Friedl. Blinded by the sun, Toni Friedl misses. This now begins the hunt for Toni. Lenz is also out and about in the area, one of his cows has lost a bell. Lenz and Toni meet on a footbridge over a ravine . Since Lenz blocks the path of his sister's unloved ex, the two men fight, as a result of which they break through the railing and fall into the depths. A little later Friedl abseils down to join both men: other villagers have also arrived at the scene of the accident. Badly injured, Lenz sees Toni, who is also badly injured, hiding a knife in the sleeve of his jacket in order to stab the approaching Friedl. With the last of his strength, Lenz kills Toni with a stone and dies.

Toni's father appears with the young family and is allowed to hug his grandchild for the first time. A little later, Friedl and Modei's wedding takes place.

The lexicon of international films said that "the fifth adaptation of the Ganghofer novel [...] [uses] the new possibilities of the widescreen format". The online version saw Der Jäger von Fall as a "home film with the sentimental-romanticizing descriptions customary in the genre."

Cinema said: “Whether 'Winnetou', 'Edgar Wallace' or 'Dr. Mabuse '- what Harald Reinl (1908–86) staged met with popular taste in Germany, as did this dusty remake. Conclusion: Kitsch , leather pants and nylon shirts tired ".
