Der Jäger von Fall is a silent German homeland film from 1918 by Ludwig Beck . It is the first film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Ludwig Ganghofer .

action

The farmer's son Blasi is a pretty bad poacher . One day his brother, whom he always takes with him on his forays, is killed by a gunshot shot by the forester's son Friedl, the hunter of the fall. Driven by revenge, Blasi then sets Friedl's parents on fire. The hunter can only save himself and his parents at the last minute. Between the two men, however, there is also the pretty dairymaid Modei, who on the one hand is fond of Friedl, on the other hand has more than just a relationship with Blasi. With her, Blasi at least thinks, has a child together. Only when Modei assures him in writing that this child is not his, Blasi abandons her and instead marries the daughter of the rich border farmer. There is no blessing on this connection, because Blasi begins to drink excessively and cannot keep his hands off the poaching. In the mountains there is finally a fateful encounter with his old rival Friedl. Blasi sees how he walks to Modei with the child in his arms because Friedl wants to bring her son, who in truth comes from Modei's relationship with Blasi, to the mountain pasture.

Blasi feels downright pursued by the hunter of Fall and arrives at Modei before him. When Friedl sees the two in the alpine hut, the forester's son draws the wrong conclusions and, since he now believes that Modei is still related to Blasi, returns disappointed to the valley, not without being told by Blasi that he is the father of the child. Blasi's unscrupulousness is becoming more and more dramatic. Modei removes a cartridge from Blasi's rifle, assuming, with good reason, that Blasi intends to shoot the hunter at the earliest opportunity. With that she actually saves Friedl's life. When Blasi Modei tries to grab her to kiss her against her will, her brother, the shepherd Lenzl, throws himself in between, and a duel ensues between him and the poaching villain. Both fall on a slope and hit the bottom. Neither of them survived this crash. Now Modei Friedl, whom she has loved for quite some time, can finally marry and give her son a decent father.

Production notes

The Jäger von Fall was made in the final phase of the First World War in the Karwendel Mountains (exterior shots) and passed film censorship in December 1918. There was already a press screening in Munich in October of the same year; the first performance for a paying audience took place in January 1919 in Berlin's Mozart Hall. The length of the five-act act was 1756 or 1858 meters, depending on the cut.

criticism

“Ganghofer's magnificent novel from the Bavarian high mountains did not affect the filming. The characters appear powerful and true to life, coming close to the characters in the novel through play and appearance. The effect of the whole is strong and powerful. The beautiful landscape pictures of the original provide the background for the abundant plot. "
