action

When Martl, the farmer from Bründlhof, asked Mayor Pfroitner for the hand of his daughter Zzil, he got a double rebuff: He wasn't good enough for the mayor and Zezzil was annoyed that Martl didn't speak to her first. Martl is not man enough for her, especially since she fell in love with Martl's gripping wood servant Sepp. Sepp impresses numerous women in the village with his brisk demeanor.

One day the mayor and a border policeman come to Martl to arrest Sepp. Martl, astonished, learns that his servant has escaped from the prison and has been involved in pushing across the border since his time at the Bründlhof. Martl offers to fetch Sepp, who is currently out in the mountains, back and deliver him to the police.

He can find Sepp in a remote alpine hut, but to his great annoyance he is not alone: Zzil is with him. Just as Martl is about to retire, however, an avalanche goes down and buries the three people in the hut. In this hour of probation ,zazil realizes the fundamental difference between the two men: Martl proves to be the strong one and uses all his strength to protect the hut from falling under the snow load. He saves the lives of all three while Sepp has fearfully given himself up. The hut is exposed in the roof area by helpers hurrying up the mountain. When a rope is lowered, the Sepp immediately grabs it to be pulled up first, but is roughly pushed aside by the Martl, who hands the rope to Zezzil. He himself can be pulled up last. After Sepp has been able to slip away in the general confusion, two border guards pursue a new meanness on his part. When jumping over a wide crevice, the fugitive misjudges himself and falls into the depths.

Zazil now knows who “the special one” is and regrets having turned down Martl. Martl is soon elected as the new mayor and goes to the Pfroitnerhof again, where he comes out beaming with joy. Both fall into each other's arms without a word and kiss and of course the young woman is only too happy to give him her yes.
