action

Vitus Brandner, master journeyman of the famous and rich violin maker Benedikt Oberbucher, and Afra Schlederer, the daughter of a poor tailor, love each other. However, the Mittenwald post office owner has her own plans. She provided the talented young man as a husband for her daughter Veronika. When Vitus now ends up in Cremona on business and he has to leave quite unexpectedly, Afra is in the mountains at the scene of the accident where her father had a fatal accident, as it is the anniversary of his death. Neither of them can say goodbye like this. When Vitus later sends someone to tell Afra that he will be back soon and only think of her, Barbara, a confidante of the post office owner, offers to pass his words on to Afra. Together, however, the women decide to keep the news to themselves. The postmaster later persuades Oberbucher, who likes Afra very much, that he should ask for the young woman's hand. Barbara, in turn, sends Afra false messages. She tells her that Vitus must have met an Italian long ago, and he also wrote that he would be away for at least another year. Of course, she doesn't mention anything about suppressing all the letters Vitus had written to Afra.

Veronika, who is not really interested in Vitus and only agreed to a relationship for the sake of her parents and Barbara, has now met someone who opens up completely new perspectives for her. She pretends to visit relatives and later sends her parents a letter stating that she has plans of her own and will not be coming home.

Oberbucher talks to Kuni Schlederer, Afra's mother, and lets him know that he is interested in her daughter. He also mentions that Kuni then no longer has to struggle as there is always a place for her in his house. Afra, disappointed with Vitus' behavior, accepts Oberbucher's proposal. On the day of the wedding, Vitus comes back and is deeply disappointed that Afra has not been waiting for him.

The next day Afra and Vitus meet, he hands her a self-made music box, which should now be his wedding present. Both speak out and realize that they have been betrayed. But it's too late. Afra is married. Vitus wants to go back to Italy. They do not notice that Benedikt Oberbucher has listened to everything. Two days later, the mountain rescue service received the news that Ludwig, a journeyman from Oberbucher, had gotten up in the mountains. A group of men immediately set out to come to his aid. Vitus is among them. Benedikt Oberbucher also wants to help. Alone he follows the rescue team. However, his weak heart can not cope with the rigors of this climbing tour, and he collapses exhausted. Vitus and the Klarinettensteffl find him and take him to a mountain hut. On the death bed and in the presence of witnesses, he entrusts Vitus with his wife and his workshop and asks him to be there and take care of Afra and to continue his work to his own and Mittenwald's glory. Then he closes his eyes forever.

Steffl remembers the story that Benedict had recently told him and the end of which was still open. That a man unknowingly made a friend and a woman he loved unhappy because other people should have played fate. When he wanted to know how the story had ended, Benedict said that he did not yet know that himself, but it was likely that the friend would withdraw to where there was no turning back. He says sadly about Vitus and Jägerfranzl that Benedict himself wrote the end. Vitus goes back to Italy for a longer period of time, only to return and keep the promise made to his friend.

Mittenwald lies between the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains , almost directly on the Austrian border. The violin making tradition in Mittenwald was founded in 1689 by Matthias Klotz . Since then, Mittenwald has developed alongside Markneukirchen to become the most important center of string and plucked instrument making in Germany to this day.

reception

criticism

“The friendship between a violin maker and his journeyman is put to the test by the love of both men for the same woman. She marries the master who has an accident during a rescue operation in the mountains and entrusts his dying wife to his friend. A decent and awkward filmed Ganghofer drama; folk entertainment. (Earlier film version of the material: Germany 1933, director: Franz Seitz). "

“Based on the play of the same name by Ludwig Ganghofer and Hans Neuert from 1884, the directorial debut of the actor Rudolf Schündler offers folk entertainment in the traditional Heimatfilm manner. A classic drama with an appealing look, staged in a more conventional and sedate manner. The acting performances are consistently solid, perhaps worth mentioning that of Paul Richter, Germany's first great silent film star and unforgettable Siegfried actor in 'The Nibelungs'. "
