They loved each other for a summer is a German-Italian melodrama by Harald Reinl that was made in Rome and Munich in 1971 . The young lovers played Amadeus August and Gundy Grand .

action

Munich, at the beginning of the 1970s. The nurse Claudia is a fun-loving young woman who one day falls in love with the also quite young painter Stefan. He tries to keep himself afloat with all sorts of small jobs such as individual and family portraits, but does not quite find a green branch. Nevertheless, the two become a couple and they have a carefree time together. Claudia and Stefan decide to get married after Claudia, as a morning gift and proof of their love, helped him to get a scholarship for a stay in Rome to study painting. Stefan is overjoyed and would like to spend a carefree time with Claudia in the "Eternal City".

But his young wife did not tell him the whole truth, because on her there is a deep dark shadow that Stefan should not know about. Due to an accident at work in "her" clinic, Claudia received an overdose of cobalt rays some time ago, which contaminated her body. Now she is terminally ill, and Stefan only realizes late that she doesn't have much longer to live. He wants to give her the rest of the time as nice as possible, and Claudia, too, enjoys the presence of her husband, last sitting in a wheelchair, and wistfully watches him doing his art, painting in the open air. But finally it comes to an end with her ...

Production notes

They made love for a summer , a largely unknown and commercially unsuccessful side work by Reinl, was made between October 5 and November 13, 1971 in the film studio in Munich and in Rome (external shoots). The premiere took place on February 18, 1972 in Wiesbaden (Atelier Kino).

Leo Metzenbauer designed the film structures, Lilo Nöbauer the costumes. Heinz Pollak was in charge of production.

With this film, Gerhard Krüger ended his career as a cameraman for cinema.

This film attempted to profit from the huge box office success of the 1970 Hollywood melodrama Love Story , which had very emotionally taken up a similar theme - a young student falls in love with a terminally ill, somewhat older fellow student.

Reviews

The reviews unanimously panned this snap shot from Reinl. They made love one summer was, besides the commissioner X chasing the red tigers, shot in the same year, his only spectacular box office flop of this decade.

"A mendacious, amateurishly staged Schnulze."

"After another twelve years, the aim was to lure the 'Loreroman' readers back to the cinema with YOU LOVED YOURSELF A SUMMER , but the tragic love story between a young painter and a clinic assistant contaminated by cobalt rays was total failure."
