Live and act

Leopold 'Leo' Metzenbauer had received practical training in the art of chasing and metal sculpture. From 1936 to 1938 he worked as a textile draftsman, then as a freelance designer in the textile industry. Since the 1930s, Metzenbauer created hundreds of sketches (including various pencil drawings) which were later bought by the City of Vienna, the Vienna Albertina and the Austrian Ministry of Education and exhibited internationally. From 1943 he also began to draw medical-anatomical studies at the institute of Prof. Eduard Pernkopf .

In 1949 Leo Metzenbauer was brought in as chief architect for Wien-Film , but did not create film decorations until 1953. He designed his most versatile buildings for fabrics that focused on classical music ( Franz Schubert, Bel Ami, Gasparone, Fidelio ). Metzenbauer was also responsible for stories with rich furnishings ( Maria Stuart, Don Carlos, Gustav Adolfs Page ).

After he hardly received any more orders from the film, Metzenbauer returned to his roots, was hired by the Vienna Institute for Pathology as a medical draftsman and from 1965 also worked as a draftsman for medical books (a total of eleven pieces, including highly specialized publications such as "Vaginal incontinence surgery and Descent surgery ").

At the beginning of the 1970s, Metzenbauer briefly returned to the cinema and designed the decorations for a series of low-content comedies and cheap sex strips.

In 1981 the versatile artist was appointed professor. With this honor, the City of Vienna recognized his work as a freelance artist, which among other things includes moving drawings by victims of National Socialism . These works were also presented in exhibitions ( MUSA Vienna ). A memorial designed by Prof. Metzenbauer for three resistance fighters employed by Siemens-Schuckert (in Leopoldstadt ), who were beheaded in the regional court of Vienna during the Nazi tyranny, disappeared as a result of the demolition of these factories.
