action
The rich Eduard von Bittermagen, who is extremely fond of women, loves betting about everything, especially when it comes to his personal physician and friend Professor Pfiff. He bets that he will achieve the impossible in Whistle's eyes and bring his nephew Tommi and Whistle's daughter Julia together. For this purpose, Bittermagen brings both of them to his alleged deathbed and promises his entire fortune to those who will find the greater number of five hidden red pillows. He also reveals that in each of the pillows there is a reference to the location of the next one hidden.
Two rival teams are formed: Tommi with the pretty but naive / stupid ice cream seller Bea on one side and Julia with her friend Jonny on the other. Bittermagen's servant Bronski watches the race and keeps reporting to his boss.
A hair-raising chase unfolds around pillow number one, which is in a local driving school car. Professor Whistle, meanwhile, has to remind the unattractive and generally undesirable nurse Helga that it is her job to take care of bitter stomach, as she prefers to join Tommi and his search for the pillows. Servant Bronski, however, wants to support Julia in her search.
The second pillow is used as decoration at a water ski show, the third is part of the Karl May Festival in Elspe. Before and during the western performance, both sides try to get hold of a red pillow, to the annoyance of the director and to the amazement of the audience.
In the beauty farm of Dr. The fourth pillow is hidden from the eagle owl, and the private clinic is also being threatened by a mad bomber who the criminal police are looking for in the entire building. Again the opposing parties try to get hold of the pillow during a tumultuous hunt through the clinic.
The fifth and last pillow, however, is handed over to Julia personally by the ingenious bitter stomach to ensure that not only he gets the bet, but Julia gets his nephew Tommi and thus also receives a not insignificant amount of money.

criticism
The lexicon of international film wrote quite neutrally about a “ready-made game with popular comedians from yesterday's German cinema”.
The film magazine Cinema said that “a big dog” is “this slapstick with Gunther Philipp, Tommi Ohrner and Willy Millowitsch really” and drew the conclusion: “Nicholas treats for junk film fans”.
Kino.de found: "Certainly not a great moment in German cinema, especially since the nerves of the audience are additionally strained by character actors like Helga Feddersen and Herbert Fux." That is "flat German humor from the early eighties, in which young stars like Tommi Ohrner ( 'Timm Thaler') and Anja Schüte together [with] the old warriors Gunther Philipp and Willy Millowitsch should provide entertainment “. Director Franz Marischka still thought it was good and immediately afterwards made a similar film with Ohrner. A fat dog was first seen on German free TV on April 28, 1995 at 8:15 p.m. on Super RTL .
