Under 18 (also under 18 , German distribution title still underage ) is an Austrian film drama from 1957 directed by Georg Tressler . Paula Wessely can be seen in the role of a social worker who lovingly takes care of the underage Elfie Breitner, played by Vera Chekhova.

action

The widowed social worker Luise Gottschalk has been appointed guardian of the underage Elfie Breitner. The seventeen-year-old has had to struggle with many difficulties and experienced things that have shaped her. This is how her mother's partner abused her. Her mother was not on her side, but on the contrary blamed the daughter for the fact that she was now alone because the seducer had to go to prison. Luise Gottschalk has put the young woman in a laundry, but Elfie does not always take it seriously with her job. When she is with her unemployed boyfriend Stefan, she forgets that she has to be on time for work. Because Stefan wants to fulfill his girlfriend's wish for a costume that she has wanted for a long time, he sells a radio that he bought in installments, although it has not yet been paid for in full. The radio dealer Sachs then made a complaint. Stefan is then sentenced to four months' arrest by the Vienna juvenile court and Elfie is also sent to a welfare home for two months for theft. Even Luise Gottschalk's testimony that the radio dealer is at least partly to blame cannot change that.

Elfie comes to a home in Klosterneuburg , where she meets the dancer Susi. The young woman is not worried about her future, because after her release from the home she wants to go back to the establishment "Paradies", where there are enough men who can stand well-built young girls. Elfie, on the other hand, has to struggle with difficulties after she is released from the home; they don't want to give her job in the laundry back. Luise Gottschalk tries very hard to find a new job for Elfie, who reacts increasingly stubborn. She struggles with her previous life in general and especially with the fact that Stefan was locked up. The young woman now wants to take her fate into her own hands. She can be tested as a mannequin at a Viennese fashion salon. There you are very impressed by her impeccable figure. Luise Gottschalk, however, refuses to give her consent. Elfie turns to Susi, who works as a striptease dancer in "Paradies", where she is offered to appear as a dancer in a revue. However, Elfie refuses such a job and shortly thereafter makes the acquaintance of Director Messmer, who is a guest in "Paradies". Messmer does not have a happy marriage and sees Elfie as the daughter he never had. He takes pleasure in fulfilling her wishes, so he also pays for the cocktail dress “borrowed” from Elfie and even furnishes the young woman with her own apartment. However, when something leaked to the public, Messmer's position was in jeopardy. Divorce would also hurt him a lot. His wife confronts him with a decision, she demands that he give up Elfie for good.

For Elfie, Messmer's decision against her collapsed a world, she had believed in his promises. For her he embodied the perfect gentleman. Stefan Maurer, who is still in custody, has received worrying mail from Elfie and is breaking out of the juvenile detention center. When he sees how Elfie now lives and that her closet is full, he freaks out and lets his unconscious anger run free. He pulls the clothes out of the closet and lets Elfie feel his contempt. Then he runs away helplessly.

Elfie learns from Detective Inspector Sandner that Stefan has not been released early from juvenile detention, as he has claimed, but has escaped. Elfie is sure where she can find help, from her carer Luise Gottschalk. While the two women are still discussing what should happen now, they learn from Sandner that Stefan has appeared completely headless at the police station and has turned himself in. In a phone call the two young people talk and Elfie assures Stefan that she will wait for him - definitely and asks his forgiveness. And Stefan is happy because he needs Elfie just as much as she needs him.
