action

After bon vivant and captain Eddie Cronen landed another ship, he and his friend Dr. Swaart stuck in a small boarding house. He hasn't paid the bill for weeks and the landlord has meanwhile stolen their pants so that the guests who are in default cannot escape. This pleases the landlady's daughter and the young Giuletta, both of whom are fighting for Eddie's favor. He finally receives a letter from the Kingdom of Dorado in which he is offered the position of commander of the fleet. Dr. Swaart had responded to an advertisement in the newspaper without Eddie's knowledge. The landlord is courting Eddie and he and Dr. Swart got her pants back. A short time later they go to Dorado.

The fleet turns out to be the old gunboat Persimon and the crew as undisciplined. They threw the last captain overboard, which is why the Prime Minister sees the daredevil Eddie as a suitable new choice, especially since Eddie uses a trick to order all of the competitors for the post from the palace. Eddie receives the job and learns that he should bring Princess Marina to Portugal the next day. Marina will come of age the next day and will rule instead of the Prime Minister from then on. According to his will, the inexperienced young woman, who was previously kept away from the people, should find a husband in Portugal. Eddie sees the ancestral gallery in the castle and is horrified that the princess could only be an ugly woman.

Marina learns from her maid that Carnival is being celebrated in Monte Carlo that evening . Since everyone can be there who he is not otherwise, she secretly disguises herself as a maid and flees the palace. She meets Eddie, who takes her to Monte Carlo. He thinks he has the princess' maid in front of him, gossips a little about the probably unattractive princess and falls in love with Marina. They go out to eat and dance and at the end he gives her a precious necklace. In the evening they meet again, visit a casino and end up on the Persimon , where Eddie and the crew have a party. During the day the princess’s belongings were loaded and Marina is puzzled when she hears about the huge number of boxes in which her belongings are supposedly stowed. She lets herself be led into the storage room and discovers gold bars in the boxes - all of Dorado's assets. The next morning she holds court. The Prime Minister asks to be allowed to go on vacation in her absence, and Marina suspects that the vacation should take place in Tangier . A stopover was also planned in Tangier. Because the prime minister wanted to take the gold boxes at this stop and disappear with them, Marina gives orders to arrest him. However, the minister knows about his power and has Marina and her confidante Contesse Tamm locked in their room. He disguises his lover Olga as a supposed princess, with whom he prepared the theft. Marina gives her the necklace that Eddie gave her.

Eddie takes off the Persimon . At a captain's dinner, he discovers the necklace he gave Marina. He now knows that the supposed princess on board is not one and that Marina must really be the ruler of Dorado. A radio connection to the country cannot be established initially because the Prime Minister is meanwhile talking about the connection to the people. He claims that Marina tried to steal the funds and he prevented her from escaping. In a short time an angry mob forms in front of the palace. Eddie finally calls for the princess to be released and wants to speak to her. Otherwise he will bomb Dorado. Marina refuses to speak to Eddie, but is forced by the Prime Minister to appear before the people who are throwing stones at her. Now she talks to Eddie, but warns him about the minister. When he grabs the microphone, she calls out that Eddie should bomb the city. Eddie gives the order to fire. In the turmoil, Colonel Joseph Ward, the lover of Contesse Tamm, finally succeeds in slaying the Prime Minister. Marina appoints him as the new prime minister. Eddie meanwhile rushed to the castle with his sailors to save Marina. When they arrive, it's all over. Marina has put on her most beautiful dress for her lover and it will be a great reunion. Eddie soon realizes that Marina now has other responsibilities as regent and releases them. He wants to come back and anchor at a certain jetty. Marina gives the order to always keep this place free. Eddie and Dr. Swaart drive off together.
