The Carousel of Life is a German silent film melodrama shot in 1918 by Georg Jacoby . The leading roles are played by Pola Negri and Harry Liedtke .

Lo, a beautiful dancer, marries Dr. Cotton. In order to finance her dissolute lifestyle, her husband commits various scams. He is tried and sentenced to two years in prison, whereupon Lo leaves him immediately and moves to Valparaíso , Chile. There she becomes the mistress of a landlord. When the latter is murdered, she fled her old life again and went back to Europe with Werner Larsen, the son of the rich consul Heinrich Larsen. In the consul's house, Lo meets her again at large husband, who works there as the consul's private secretary.
However, Lo ignores him completely and instead begins to flirt violently with Consul Larsen and his son until they both fall in love with her. She prefers the consul out of calculation. His son asks Lo to marry him, whereupon the dancer leaves the house in the hope that Consul Heinrich will ask her back. While she is having fun with the consul in the "Trocadero", Werner suddenly stands, from her husband Dr. Cotton led there, in front of the Separée and shoots himself in front of the eyes of both lovemakers. Obviously not particularly impressed by this, Lo doesn't let her champagne mood spoil and continues to party. Only at dawn does she leave the company, go to a river and drown herself.
Production notes
The carousel of life was created shortly before the end of the First World War in 1918 in the Ufa Union studio in Berlin-Tempelhof . The four-act film was 1,561 meters long and was premiered in February or March 1919 in Berlin's Kammer-Lichtspiele.
