Life
Denise Gray, who comes from the Aosta Valley , began her professional career as a saleswoman and as a model. This is how she was discovered for film and made her debut in the silent film production Mademoiselle Etchika in 1913 . However, she did not achieve her artistic breakthrough in film, but in 1915 as a singer in the revues of the Folies Bergère , when she had to replace a colleague at short notice. This led to a solo engagement at Cabaret La Pied Qui Cante . During the 1920s and 1930s she played on various Parisian stages, but also repeatedly in film productions such as Adieu, Leonard! . She played the leading role alongside Fernandel in the 1940 comedy Monsieur Hector and was seen in a larger role in Claude Autant-Lara's literary film adaptation of the Devil in the Body from 1947.
After the Second World War, she belonged for a long time to the Comédie-Française ensemble alongside Jean-Louis Barrault and Madeleine Renaud , where she played “Dorinne” in Tartuffe . Gray had late success as the great-grandmother of Sophie Marceau in La Boum - The Fete and La Boum 2 - The Fete Goes On .
In 1991 Denise Gray retired from the stage at the age of 95. She died in Paris eight months before her 100th birthday.
