On sounding banks is an Austrian love drama (war homecoming film) by Hans Unterkircher from 1948.

action

In February 1943, the young nurse Maria Burg was drafted as an auxiliary nurse. In the hospital, she meets the wounded soldier Stefan Keller. He is actually a painter, falls in love with Maria and draws her. Maria, in turn, meets the pianist Alexander Varena, who also falls in love with her. Maria opts for Stefan, with whom she spends a few happy days until he is suddenly called up to the front. He promises to return and she promises to wait for him. In the following months, both letters wrote each other. Alexander Varena continues to court her and eventually even proposes marriage, which she refuses.

One day Maria receives a letter from the front informing her that Stefan died in August 1944. She suffers a severe nervous breakdown; Alexander takes care of her and takes her to a sanatorium by the lake near his home. She gets to know and appreciate the quiet area and Alexander's friends, including the abbot of the nearby monastery and the unsuccessful composer Benjamin Keller. In May 1947, Maria and Alexander married, although Maria is more grateful to him.

Stefan returns from the war. In his hometown he finds Maria's house bombed and only learns at an office that Maria has moved away unknown. He decides to go to his uncle Benjamin. Benjamin is thrilled to see Stefan alive and stays with him. He also arranges a painting assignment for him: he is supposed to paint Saint Catherine for the monastery church . The abbot suggests Maria as a model. Meanwhile, another guest has arrived at Villa Varena. Star violinist Gabriele Wergeland from Sweden used to be Alexander's music and life partner. Maria reacts restlessly to Gabriele's presence, as Alexander still seems to have feelings for the violinist. Stefan finally arrives at Villa Varena and realizes that the model is supposed to be Maria. He is surprised and shocked and chooses Gabriele as his model. Maria is shocked that Stefan is still alive. In addition, she accidentally realizes that Alexander is addicted to morphine and his health is suffering as a result. Only Benjamin is happy, as Gabriele wants to premiere his violin work Mondnachtsphantasie .

Stefan tells Benjamin about his relationship with Maria. Alexander learns of the relationship through a letter Maria writes to Stefan. Stefan and Maria meet, but Maria doesn't want to leave the sick Alexander for Stefan. Alexander, in turn, makes it clear to his wife that he will never release her. When Benjamin tries to talk to Alexander on the day of the premiere of his work, there is a loud exchange of words. Alexander collapses and dies. The doctor diagnoses a heart attack as a result of heavy drug use, so that both Benjamin and Stefan are not suspected of murder. Benjamin is present at the premiere of his work and is deeply moved. Stefan completes his holy picture and he and Maria become a couple again.
