Otto Tressler , also Otto Treßler , actually Otto Karl August Meyer or Otto Karl August Mayer , (born April 13, 1871 in Stuttgart , † April 27, 1965 in Vienna ) was a German-Austrian actor and theater director .

Life

Tressler attended the Dillmann Realgymnasium in Stuttgart for a few years before working as a bookseller and businessman. Initially an amateur actor , he was discovered by Joachim Gans zu Putlitz in 1892 and then a professional actor . He received an engagement at the Court Theater in Stuttgart, where he made his debut as "Stahlfeder" in Sword of Damocles , and at the German People's Theater in Vienna.

From 1896 to 1961 he played a total of 383 roles at the Burgtheater . He embodied Franz Moor in The Robbers , the title characters of Clavigo , Peer Gynt and Hamlet , Mephisto in Faust and Fiesco in The Fiesco Conspiracy to Genoa . In 1902 he received the decree as an imperial court actor, in 1915 he became chief director.

From 1914 he also played in various films. He mostly represented high-ranking personalities, initially in leading roles, later only in supporting roles.

The film His Last Model, completed in 1936, was made in a German-Hungarian joint production . The actors were Otto Tressler, the Hungarian baritone Alexander Svéd , Hilde von Stolz , Rudolf Carl , Camilla Horn and the actor Paul Javor from the Budapest State Theater .

Tressler was a friend of Archduchess Maria Josepha . He was married four times. First he married his colleague Sophie von Dierkes in Stuttgart , who also played minor roles as Sophie Tressler at the Burgtheater. In his second marriage he was married to Eleonore Keil von Bündten (the children Dieter and Georg came from this marriage), from 1928 onwards he was married to the actress Hilde Wagener in his third marriage, and in his fourth marriage to Hilde Tressler (née Toscani).

He had been a citizen of the City of Vienna since 1931 and was awarded the City of Vienna's Ring of Honor twice (1937 and 1951). He was one of the first tenants in Vienna's first skyscraper in Herrengasse, where he lived until his death in order to have shorter ways to rehearsals and performances in the Burgtheater.

His son Georg Tressler became a famous director, his granddaughter Melanie Tressler is an actress. He rests in an honorary grave at the Döblinger Friedhof in Vienna (group 25, crypt 16), next to his fourth wife Hilde Tressler.
