The Lochsa River is the 110 km long right source river of the Middle Fork Clearwater River in the US state Idaho .

River course

The Lochsa River arises at the confluence of its two headwaters, Crooked Fork (right) and Colt Killed Creek (left) on the western flank of the Bitterroot Mountains in northern Idaho. The Idaho State Highway 111 crosses the two source fluxes immediately above their confluence. The Idaho State Highway 102 passes 3.5 km from the Idaho State Highway 111 along the upper kilometers of the flow Lochsa River on the Powell Ranger station over to US Highway 12 . The Lochsa River flows through the mountains in a predominantly west-southwest direction. The river runs in a gorge framed by granite rocks and lined with coniferous forests. The river is within the Clearwater National Forest . The Lochsa River joins the Selway River at Lowell to form the Middle Fork Clearwater River. The 107 km long stretch of river below Powell Ranger Station was added to the National Wild and Scenic River System in 1968 in the recreational category . US Highway 12 follows the course of the river on this route.

Hydrology

The Lochsa River drains an area of ​​2051 km². The mean discharge at the mouth is 80 m³ / s. The river carries the largest amounts of water in May during the snowmelt with an average of 283 m³ / s.

The river offers rapids up to difficulty IV +. Between May and July the river has enough water for whitewater activities . It can be driven on in several days.
