Lundie Parish Church

The Lundie Parish Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish village of Lundie in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

A church has been on the site since the 12th century. The Baronate Lundie gave William the Lion to the monks of Coupar Angus Abbey towards the end of the century, who built a church there dedicated to the martyr Laurentius . It is possible that the complex served as a stop for the monks on their way from St Andrews to Coupar Angus. During the 13th century the building was redesigned. In 1618 the parish was united with the neighboring parish of Easter Fowlis . Possibly it is the earliest merger of two parishes in the Church of Scotland. In 1786 the apse on the east side was removed and a gallery was added on the west side. In 1789 his widow had a mausoleum for William Duncan, 1st Baronet , the personal physician Georg III. , erect.

Although fragments of the medieval Romanesque church are still preserved today, the parish church was given its present appearance in two construction phases during the 19th century. In 1846 the Lundie Parish Church was partially rebuilt and redesigned in 1892 by Thomas Saunders Robertson . The later phase also included the transformation of the mausoleum into a sacristy . The people buried there were reburied in the newly built, classical Duncan Mausoleum . The roof turret with open bells also dates from this time.
