The Big Hole River is the left headwaters of the Jeffersons , a headwaters of the Missouri , in the state of Montana in the United States .

It rises in Skinner Lake east of the Idaho border at 2,245 m. The Big Hole River flows northeast and bends north at Laphan Mountain (2,386 m). Past Jackson and Wisdom, it flows through the Big Hole Valley . From Melrose , the Big Hole River runs partially parallel to Interstate 15 . A little north of Twin Bridges it joins the Beaverhead River to Jefferson .
