Nicholas C. Mullins

Nicholas Creed Mullins (born 1939 in Boise , Idaho , † July 6, 1988 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American sociologist .

Life

Nicholas C. Mullins studied sociology at Cornell University and received a Ph.D. at the Department of Social Relations at Harvard University . He taught at Vanderbilt University , Dartmouth College and Indiana University and became a professor at Virginia Tech ( Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University ) in 1984 .

Mullin's academic work included the sociology of science (specifically the analysis of informal communication between groups of scientists), sociological theory (network analysis as an alternative to traditional sociological techniques) and the use of computers in the social sciences.

Mullins became President of the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) in 1985 .

Honors

The Society for Social Studies of Science presents the Nicholas C. Mullins Award annually for an outstanding achievement by a graduate student in the field of Science and Technology Studies .
