Society for Social Studies of Science
The Society for Social Studies of Science ( 4S ) is a scientific association for research into science and technology . It was founded in 1975 and in 2008 had more than 1,200 international members. Kim Fortun has been president since 2018 .
Its first president was the American sociologist Robert K. Merton . She is currently based in the Department of Sociology at Louisiana State University . 4S is a quarterly scientific journal Science, Technology, & Human Values and organizes an annual conference with hundreds of participants from areas such as science and technology studies , sociology , science studies , history of science , philosophy of science , scientific anthropology , economics , political science , psychology , and Science educators.
4S annually awards the Ludwik Fleck Prize for the best book in the field of science and technology research; the Rachel Carson Prize for work of social or political relevance; the John Desmond Bernal Prize for outstanding contributions and the Nicholas C. Mullins Prize for outstanding graduate students .
