The Boise River is a 164 km long right tributary of the Snake River in the US state of Idaho . It drains part of the Sawtooth Range in southwest Idaho northeast of Boise and part of the western Snake River Plain . The catchment area covers around 10620 km².
River course
The Boise River has three source rivers that arise in the Sawtooth Range at altitudes over 3000 m. The actual Boise River is formed by the confluence of the North Fork Boise River and Middle Fork Boise River , about 25 km southeast of Idaho City . The main river flows in a southwest direction to Arrowrock Reservoir . The South Fork Boise River also flows into the reservoir . Anderson Ranch Dam is also located on the South Fork .
Below the Arrowrock Dam, the Boise River turns west. It takes up the tributary Mores Creek and passes the Lucky Peak Dam . 5 km south of Nyassa the river meets the Snake River.
history
The river, which was called "Reed's River" in the early 19th century, was explored in 1811 by the Astor expedition .
The river is used to irrigate the plains west of Boise. The dams that make up the mountain reservoirs were built as part of the Bureau of Reclamation's "Boise Project". Purpose was the irrigation for agriculture, the use of hydropower, the drinking water supply, as well as the flood protection for Boise and the Treasure Valley .
The most important completion dates were:
- 1909 - Boise River Diversion Dam & New York Canal
- 1915 - Arrowrock Dam
- 1950 - Anderson Ranch Dam - (S. Fork)
- 1955 - Lucky Peak Dam - ( US Army Corps of Engineers )
