Silvio Angelo Pio Cardinal Oddi (born November 14, 1910 in Morfasso , Province of Piacenza , Italy , † June 29, 2001 in Cortemaggiore , Italy) was a Vatican diplomat and a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

After theological studies in Piacenza and Rome, Silvio Angelo Pio Oddi received the sacrament of ordination on May 21, 1933 . After three more years of study, he joined the diplomatic service of the Vatican in 1936 . From 1936 to 1939 he was secretary of the Apostolic Delegation in Iran , from 1939 to 1945 he carried out the same task in Syria and Lebanon , from 1945 to 1948 in Egypt and from 1948 to 1951 in France . From 1951 to 1953 he headed the Apostolic Nunciature in Yugoslavia .

In 1953 Pope Pius XII appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Mesembria and apostolic delegate for Jerusalem , Palestine , Transjordan and Cyprus . He received his episcopal ordination from Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, who later became Pope John XXIII. ; Co- consecrators were Umberto Malchiodi , coadjutor in the Diocese of Piacenza , and Archbishop Antonio Samorè . In 1957 Silvio Oddi was apostolic internuncio in Egypt , in 1962 nuncio in Belgium and internuncio in Luxembourg . From 1962 to 1965 he took part in the Second Vatican Council . In 1969 Pope Paul VI took it . as cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Sant'Agata dei Goti in the college of cardinals , made him responsible for the sanctuary in Loreto and appointed him papal legate for the basilica of St. Francis in Assisi . From 1979 to 1986 he was Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy . In 1989 Pope John Paul II sent him to the funeral of the Japanese Emperor Hirohito as the Vatican representative .

Silvio Oddi died on June 29, 2001 in Cortemaggiore and was buried in the old parish church of his birthplace Morfasso.
