Virgilio Cardinal Noè (born March 30, 1922 in Zelata di Bereguardo , Province of Pavia , † July 24, 2011 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal curia of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

After studying philosophical and theological studies, Virgilio Noè received the sacrament of ordination in 1944 and initially worked as a youth minister in Pavia . From 1948 to 1952 he completed a doctoral degree in ecclesiastical history at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He then worked as a student pastor , spiritualist and lecturer in Pavia and Tortona , as well as the president of the diocesan liturgy commission of his home diocese. From 1964 to 1969 he headed the Institutum Liturgicum Pastorale and taught at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute of St. Anselmo in Rome.

On May 7, 1969, Pope Paul VI appointed him . as Undersecretary of the newly established Congregation for Divine Worship and on August 4th of the same year conferred on him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness .

On January 9, 1970, the Ufficio per le Ceremonie Pontificie ( Office for the Papal Ceremonies ) was established and Paul VI. called Virgilio Noè to the papal ceremonial . At the same time he took over pastoral care for the Papal Guard . In 1982 Noè was appointed Titular Archbishop of Voncaria by Pope John Paul II and appointed Secretary of the Congregation for the Sacraments and Liturgy . The episcopal ordination donated him John Paul II on March 6, 1982. St. Peter's Basilica ; Co- consecrators were Archbishop Eduardo Martínez Somalo and the Bishop of Pavia , Antonio Giuseppe Angioni .

1989 Pope named him John Paul II. To Coadjutor of the Cardinal Archpriest of the Vatican Basilica of St. Peter , in the position he nachrückte in 1991. He was also the Vicar General of His Holiness for the Vatican City , director of the cathedral building hut of Saint Peter and president of the permanent commission for the protection of the historical and artistic monuments of the Holy See. From 1993 to 1996 he was President of the Pontifical Commission of Cardinals for the Papal Shrines of Pompeii , Loreto and Bari .

On February 26, 2002 he was appointed cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria Regina Apostolorum . Shortly afterwards, on April 24, 2002, the then 80-year-old resigned from his position as archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica. Virgilio Cardinal Noè died in Rome on July 24, 2011 at the age of 89.
