Francesco Cardinal Marchisano (born June 25, 1929 in Racconigi , Province of Cuneo , † July 27, 2014 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman and biblical scholar and Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church . He was the archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica for many years and was responsible for the cultural assets of the church.

Life

Marchisano attended the minor seminary in Giaveno (1940–1945) and studied philosophy in Chieri (1945–1948) and theology in Turin (1948–1949) and Rivoli Torinese (1949–1952). He received at the Cathedral of the June 29, 1952 Turin by Maurilio Cardinal Fossati the sacrament of Holy Orders . This was followed by postgraduate studies with a view to teaching at the seminary of Rivoli Torinese at the Pontifical Lombard Seminary (1952–1956). During these years he completed a licentiate degree in Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome (1954) and a PhD in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. From 1956 he worked in the Roman Curia, initially in the Congregation for Catholic Education under Cardinal Pizzardo. From 1969 to 1988 he was Undersecretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education. On July 13, 1963, Pope Paul VI awarded him . the honorary title of Surplus Secret Chamberlain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ).

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Populonia and secretary of the papal commission for the cultural property of the Church on October 6, 1988 .
