Romberg (family of musicians)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Romberg is the name of a branching German family of musicians who mainly worked in Münster and the surrounding area.

From the time the clarinetist Gerhard Heinrich Romberg joined the Hofkapelle Münster in 1771 until it was dissolved in 1803 , four or more Rombergs often played in this orchestra. Gerhard Heinrich Romberg and his brother Bernhard Anton Romberg, who joined the court orchestra in 1773 , on the bassoon were often referred to as "The older Romberg brothers".
Nowadays the most famous representatives of the family are the cousins Andreas Romberg ( violin virtuoso and composer) and Bernhard Romberg ( cello virtuoso and composer), who undertook concert tours through Europe under the false title "The Romberg Younger Brothers" at a young age. Both were good friends of Ludwig van Beethoven and Louis Spohr .
